Knoxville, TN (WVLT) -- A six year-old woke his mother early Monday morning, complaining about a smoky smell coming from the kitchen/ laundry room.
Sabrina Saunders was asleep on her couch on Maple Drive in Fountain City around 5:30 a.m. when the fire broke out. The family and the pets rushed to get outside and Saunders called police.
Firefighters responded to the scene and seemed to contain the fire to the rear of the home. Nobody was hurt and the family says they have family with whom they can stay.
Saunders told firefighters she had smoke detectors but didn't hear them go off.
The Knoxville Fire Department reminds homeowners to change the batteries when they set their clocks for Daylight Saving Time and to check them monthly.
