FARRAGUT, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Authorities now have one of their suspects, after an afternoon shoplifting at a West Knox County grocery store, turned into a deputy shooting at the suspects in the parking lot.
One of the suspects from the on-going investigation is now at UT Medical Center.
It all started around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, when a Knox County Sheriff's Deputy approached two alleged shoplifters as they were loading up their car, but things got out of control fast, and a customer was only a few feet away from the entire thing.
"I came out and started to put my groceries in the trunk of my car, and I heard someone yelling stop, stop," said Kroger customer, Harry Scott.
In the parking lot at the Kroger Market Place in Farragut, Harry turned around to find Knox County Sheriff's Deputy Grayson Fritz yelling at two men as they loaded their car with a cart full of allegedly stolen items.
"I turned around and seen this car pulling forward, it was backed into the parking spot," added Harry.
The Sheriff's Department says the faded blue Nissan Maxima tried hitting Deputy Fritz.
"They continued going and he yelled stop, and they kept going, and he started shooting at them. The car then really sped up and almost hit me, I had to jump out of the way,” said Harry.
The deputy shot out the window of the suspect's vehicle, and Harry said, “But they wouldn't stop, they just kept going and he yelled at them again to stop, and then took another shot at them and they sped away."
Right after hitting Harry's car parked across from the suspect's, and pushing it into a SUV.
"When the shooting started I really got scared," said Harry.
Luckily Harry and the Deputy were fine.
The driver of the car was shot in the neck and the upper shoulder.
Two hours after the shooting, he turned up in Jefferson County, at the Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
"When that car was coming at me and between the bullets, I don't know what I was thinking. I was just trying to get out of the way."
The Knox county sheriff's department is still looking for the passenger. He is described as white, heavy set, and was wearing khaki pants and a red and blue western style long-sleeved shirt at the time.
Deputies have not released the identity of the driver, but he was flown to UT medical center around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Deputies did also find the get-away car hidden behind a home in Jefferson County.
