FARRAGUT, Tenn (WVLT) -- Knox County Sheriff's Office investigators have identified the man shot by Deputy Grayson Fritts Wednesday afternoon as Alfred Compton, 46.

He was taken from Jefferson Memorial Hospital to UT Medical Center for treatment of gunshot wounds to the neck and the shoulder.

Compton was released Thursday and immediately transported to the Knox County Sheriff’s Detention Facility.

He has been charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, Evading Arrest, Driving on a Suspended License, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and is being held on a combined bond of $215,000.

Deputies say Fritts saw Alfred Compton and his son Andrew Compton put items into a shopping cart and exit the store without paying. Fritts approached the two men as they were loading the stolen items into their car, police say in a warrant against Alfred Compton.

Fritts asked the men to show a receipt for the items, and "Andrew Compton produced a wadded up old piece of paper," the warrant states. "The Comptons jumped into the vehicle and attempted to flee."

That's when Fritts grabbed Andrew Compton by the arm and demanded the men get out of the car, according to the warrant. Alfred put the car into gear and tried to flee, wedging Fritts between the passenger door and he door post, the warrant states.

"Fritts was in fear for his life and/or bodily injury," the warrant says. "In an attempt to protect himself he pulled out his service weapon and fired at Alfred Compton."

The Comptons continued forward, hitting another vehicle, giving Fritts a chance to approach the vehicle, open the door and order Alfred Compton to stop the car, turn it off and get out, according to the warrant, but the suspect refused.

"Fritts was wedged in between the door post and drivers door as Alfred Compton put the vehicle into reverse and attempted to back over Off. Fritts," the warrant states.

Fritts again opened fire on the Alfred Compton.

It's not clear whether Compton was hit the first or second time Fritts opened fire, or if he was struck both times.

Deputies are still looking for Andrew Compton. Anyone with information is asked to call 215-2432.
