ANDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Officers serving an arrest warrant at an Andersonville home Friday discovered human remains inside the house, and have requested the assistance of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Knox County Sheriff's Department bomb squad to recover them, according to supervisory U.S. Marshal Warren Mays.
Mays says officers went to 355 Loan Mountain Road to serve the arrest warrant against Brad Smith for an alleged parole violation. Smith has a criminal history involving weapons and explosives, Mays says.
When officers entered the home, they found the remains. Investigators are unable to say whether the remains belong to Smith or someone else.
Smith's parole officer apparently hasn't heard from him since July, which is what led to the arrest warrant being issued.
Mays says Smith is on parole after serving time for being a felon in possession of a firearm and being in possession of destructive devices. The weapons were found after officers responded to his home on July 22, 2006, on a domestic disturbance call.
At the time, officers reportedly found multiple firearms, a hand grenade and 12-gauge shotgun shells that were modified to explode on impact. Officers also say they found items consistent with those used to make explosives in Smith's garage.
When Smith was arrested on those charges, Anderson County deputies found apparent bomb-making items, and the home was reportedly booby trapped.
Friday, as a precaution, officers requested the assistance of the TBI and the Knox County Sheriff's Department's bomb squad in order to recover the remains and secure the scene.
