MCMINN COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – A small earthquake shook part of McMinn County on Monday night.
The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the 1.0 magnitude quake struck at 8:16 p.m.
The epicenter was located about two miles north of Athens, in a field near the intersection of Congress Parkway and Clearwater Road. It originated in a small fault 10.4 miles underground.
Most of the region sits on the Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone, which is considered one of the most earthquake-prone areas of the south.
