KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Ashley Manes says she's a lucky 14-year-old girl. "I have a good family," said Ashley, a family who is determined to fight for her health after she was crippled in a car accident ten years ago. She's paralyzed from the neck down.
"You couldn't ask for a better kid," said her father Joe Manes. He's facing another challenge as Ashley was cut from TennCare earlier this month because her family makes too much money.
"You are looking at $20,000 dollars a month," said Mr. Manes. "That's just counting medicines and supplies that she needs. That's not counting the nursing that she needs." And without TennCare's support, Manes doesn't know where to turn.
"The company I work for doesn't supply health insurance," said Manes. "When you think about paying $20,000 out of pocket, there's nobody around that can withstand that."
TennCare says the state is re-verifying individuals like Ashley to be sure they still qualify for aid. "It's supported by the people of Tennessee, so we want to make sure only the individuals who legally qualify for the program are the individuals who are receiving benefits," said Kelly Gunderson, spokesperson for TennCare.
To qualify you must meet a certain income level by category. One category, for example, is medically needy. "If a family's income is offset by the amount of bills they have, medical bills, that can spend down their income and have the individual qualify for Medicaid," Gunderson.
The Manes say they need support and deserve it, so they will appeal Ashley's case Wednesday. "I will keep fighting and keep appealing," said Manes.
"Some of it's not fun, but I go through it anyway," said Ashley. Although Gunderson couldn't speak to Manes specific case, she says it is possible Ashley and others under re-verification still qualify.
The family is currently trying to find other options, but they say many won't cover near the amount of care Ashley needs. The Manes say they are already spending close to a thousand dollars a month out of pocket with TennCare coverage.

I mean no disrespect, but how does her "disabilty" keep her from working but yet she is married, wich would imply to me that she has to "work" at things in the house, perhaps, cooking cleaning, laundry, etc. It's like when I see people with hadicapped stickers get the preferential close parking, but yet they will be walking around the mall or Disneyland. It's when I go huh?
I know this child very well. She has such strength and zest for life. She makes you feel good around her, she's so positive! She's a beautiful angel on earth. She also knows where who is control now and when it happen He brought back for a reason and she is not going anywhere until He says so. She has a personal relationship with God. She knows why He kept her here too! Love you angel!! I'm very lucky to have you for my beautiful granddaughter!!
I just can not believe what I some of the comments I am reading about this child... There is really shallow people in world. As I pray for Ashley I pray for those who are so shallow. This child DESERVES the medical care and coverage she needs. Please continue to pray for this child as she and her family fights another brave battle!
