NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A $100,000 donation has been made to provide free books to children in Middle and East Tennessee through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program.
The Appalachian Regional Commission donated the money to Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen's Books from Birth Foundation, which will disperse the funds among 52 counties in Tennessee.
Created by the country singer in her hometown of Sevierville in 1996, Imagination Library provides a new, age-appropriate hardcover book every month to children from birth to age 5 at no cost to the family and regardless of income.
Bredesen started the Governor's Books from Birth Foundation in 2004 to establish, strengthen and sustain Imagination Library in all Tennessee counties.
