KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- The summer heat won't stop kids from having fun outdoors, but with a heat index of 105, staff members at the 64th Annual "Fun Day" event are taking some necessary precautions.
"It was supposed to run until 2 p.m. but we cut it thirty minutes short," said Josh Yarbrough, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Halls/Powell. "We've got paramedics here from Rural Metro to help out in case we have any issues with the heat."
Sandra Neace, a paramedic on the scene, said they plan to stay throughout the event to make sure the kids don't get ill from the heat. Neace said they've gotten a lot of calls from heat-related emergencies throughout the county.
"We're here just in case," she said.
Amber Ward, an ER nurse at UT Medical Center, said they see about 100 patients during the summer months.
"They're just people that got out in their garden expecting a whole lot of weather and just didn't stay hydrated," she said. "Kids who are in sports have come in a lot of times with dehydration."
Dehydration is the excessive loss of body fluids, which can be prevented if you keep hydrated. But there are two other illnesses you should make sure to watch out for: Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion.
The symptoms for heat stroke include: hot, red or dry skin, very small pupils and a high body temperature. The symptoms for heat exhaustion include: cool or moist skin, looking pale, sweating heavily, headache and nausea or dizziness.
Health experts say children and the elderly are the highest at risk, but any one can experience a heat-related emergency. You can beat the heat as long as you stay hydrated and cool.
