MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Back to school is less than a week away for some East Tennessee students. Tuesday supplies for some needy Maryville City School children arrived by bike.
Engines on, and saddlebags stuffed with supplies, the Ladies of Harley arrived. "Met up, strapped everything on, and rode over." The women's riding group from Smokey Mountain Harley Davidson gathered folders and notebooks.
They raised funds to ride relief into Maryville City Schools' Family Resource Center -- helping needy children prepare for back to school. "Anything that we can give to help a child learn, it's just a little part of our day," said Donna McKale, an organizer with Ladies of Harley.
The nonprofit organizes help through dozens of drives, but a cause for the kids was one they couldn't pass up. "It's giving and we do love to give. It's like Christmas every time we do something," said Rose Carroll, director of Ladies of Harley.
"There's always someone out there, that needs a, I say, a hand up. You know," said McKale. The Family Resource Center says their Children's Fund provides supplies for nearly 200 students each year.
"With the economy, and the situation in the community, we've not received as much funding as we had in the past from the community, from donations," said Family Resource Center Director Etta Caldwell.
As parents request help, the resource center will combine the supplies with other donations to send each child home with a backpack to prepare them for a new school year. "Having these supplies...we can start stuffing the backpacks that we do have," she said. "We would not have the funding to do all of this on our own. So we're fortunate to have a group like the Harley Ladies to want to give to us, and want to help us." The family resource center tries to help with clothes, a new pair of shoes and supplies each fall.
The ladies say although this roundup was the first, it won't be the last. "We won't say goodbye to this one. We'll keep this on our to-do list."
If parents within Maryville need assistance, they can contact Maryville City School's central office at (865) 982-7121. You can also drop off supplies for other students as well.
