KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The lone woman convicted in one of East Tennessee's most infamous murder cases was sentenced to more than a half century in prison on Friday.
Vanessa Coleman was found guilty of facilitation of the murder, kidnapping, rape and theft of Channon Christian. She was found not guilty on every charge in any crimes related to Chris Newsom’s death.
During the Friday morning sentencing, Christian’s parent’s appeared before the court to read their victim’s impact statements. During their statements they shared how Channon’s death had changed their lives, and why they feel Coleman should receive the maximum punishment of 77 years in prison.
“On 1-7-07 she went to be with God,” Gary Christian, Channon’s father said of his only daughter, “because of you and all the vermin that you ran with."
"Any claim that you tried to distance yourself from the torture, beating and repeated rapes is belied with the many opportunities you had to leave and/or report these crimes,” said Deena Christian, Channon’s mother, “but chose not to."
Following victim impact statements, Judge Richard Baumgartner sentenced Coleman to 53 years in prison. She will be eligible for parole in just 16 years.
The decision upset the both the Christian and Newsom families, who explained that they won’t allow her to win back her freedom that easily.
"Maybe you're not hearing me,” said Gary Christian, “we're not done, justice has not been served.”
“I may not be here when she comes up for parole,” said Hugh Newsom, Chris Newsom’s father, “but I intend for my relatives and my remaining kids to be there to protest."
Coleman had the opportunity to speak before she was sentenced. She could have taken the stand to apologize or simply show remorse, but she chose not to.
Her father chose to speak Volunteer TV News in an exclusive interview about a month after the jury found her guilty. Greg Coleman still believes his daughter did nothing wrong in connection with the case .
“How are they going to find someone guilty with not a shred of evidence,” he asked during the interview.
Coleman was convicted in the spring by a Davidson County jury. Her father believes jurors were swayed by lies told on the witness stand.
“Someone else was only trying to save their own neck," he said of some of the prosecution’s star witnesses. “Such as Daphne [Sutton], when I think of the time frame that she was in the house, I think something should've been done there."
Even though Coleman is now headed to a state prison, her father still insists details about what happened in the Chipman Street house are being withheld.
"There are other people that should've been charged in this case that didn't," he said.
Coleman acknowledges most people believe his daughter is guilty, but said they'll continue to support her. He also plans to help her appeal the conviction.
“We can only go forward and try to make the appropriate steps."
Vanessa will remain locked up at the Knox County Detention Center until she is processed into the Tennessee Department of Corrections system. That will most likely take place at the Tennessee Prison for Women in Nashville.
