United against drunk driving

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Alcoa Police Department and Blount County Sheriff Department are uniting in a WASP (Wide Area Saturation Enforcement) Friday night.

It's in memory of a 21-year-old woman and her 10-month-old son killed by a drunk driver two years ago.

Alcoa Police Officers and Blount County Sheriff’s Deputies will be on the lookout for impaired drivers Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Brittany Thomas and her son Aiden William Thomas both died on February 27, 2010 on Alcoa Highway.

Jeffrey Allen Knight was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and sentenced in January to 10 years in prison.

Knight’s blood alcohol was .2, more than double the legal limit of .08.

In a joint statement, Chief Burge and Sheriff Berrong said one of their main goals is to reduce the number of traffic fatalities in Blount County, especially those involving drugs and alcohol.

“Alcohol and drug-related crashes continues to be a problem in the nation, the state of Tennessee, and right here in Blount County,” Sheriff Berrong said.

“Local law enforcement is committed to going after individuals who attempt to drive impaired. We do not want to see another accident like the one that took the lives of Brittany and Aiden Thomas.”
