Making sense of your data plan

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Verizon Wireless has joined AT&T in eliminating unlimited data plans for all new customers. How will this affect you?

The old plan was $30.00 for unlimited data usage for smart phone users. But now, new customers will pay $30.00 for 2 gigabytes of usage. That might not seem like a lot of data for a smart phone but for most it is.

Karen Schulz from Verizon Wireless tells us "95% of our customers use 2 gigabytes or less in a month. We [Verizon] wanted to make sure that the 95% of customers that were using less weren't subsidizing the 5 percent that we using significantly more."

There are ways that you can figure out how much data you use with a data calculator found on the Verizon Wireless website.

"You plug in estimated amounts of what you use your phone for. Then the calculator will total it and help you pick the best data plan." says Karen

There are also alerts that can be sent to your phone that tell you how much data you are using.

"For people who are just using their phone to check emails, facebook or twitter; they shouldn't have a problem. But if you watch TV, videos or movies on your phone; you might need more than 2 gigabytes." says Karen
