Police identify the victim in an East Knoxville shooting

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville Police have identified the victim in a shooting outside a market in East Knoxville Monday evening.

Officers responded to the Magnolia Mart at 2400 E. Magnolia Avenue around 8:00, where they found 24-year-old Maurice Gillespie, who had been shot in the leg at the front of the store.

The victim and witnesses told police that three black males, believed to be juveniles, approached him, pulled out a semi-automatic pistol, and shot him before fleeing on foot.

Gillespie was taken to UT Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation into the shooting incident is continuing. Investigators are examining evidence recovered from the scene and working to identify individuals that may be connected to the shooting.
