KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- McGhee Tyson Airport served 1,774,252 passengers in 2011 making it the third busiest year in the airport's history.
The 2011 passenger traffic record indicates a 5 percent increase from 2010. American, Delta, United/Continental and US Airways all reported increases.
“Breaking passenger traffic records in 2011 is a significant indication of how well the community has responded to McGhee Tyson Airport’s lower fares and flexible flight schedules,” said Howard Vogel, Chairman of the MKAA Board of Commissioners. “We expect to see passenger levels continue to grow in 2012 as we work to make air travel as affordable and accessible as possible.”
Also, The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority’s Board of Commissioners voted today to authorize an International Gate Study that will explore the airport’s ability to foster international service.
The study will examine the airport’s current terminal building and opportunities for possible expansion if needed. It will also address the regulations set on international airports by organizations such as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to determine if McGhee Tyson Airport meets their requirements for service.
“This study is critical to the future growth of McGhee Tyson Airport as we continue to stay competitive in today’s challenging aviation environment,” said Vogel. “In order for the airport to expand its air service opportunities, it needs to investigate all avenues available including international operations.”
