Schools granted $50k for STEM programs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Verizon Foundation has granted $50,000 in funding to Tennessee schools to enhance science, technology, engineering and math programs across the state.

Lake City Middle School in Anderson County, Stone Elementary School and Homestead Elementary School in Cumberland County, and Rhea County Schools are the schools in East Tennessee that will receive a portion of the grant.

The grant will allow schools to use resources at Thinkfinity.org, an award-winning educational website with tens of thousands of free, engaging materials for teachers and students. The site includes resources such as K-12 lesson plans, in-class activities and videos that can be searched by grade level, keyword or subject.

"Verizon Thinkfinity.org offers high-end resources to our students' educators, allowing quick and easy access to teaching and learning materials from some of the most trusted names in education," said Julie C. Smith, vice president of external affairs for Verizon's Southeast region in a release. "Our hope is that these grants will equip teachers with the tools they need to engage students in STEM subjects and take student achievement in Tennessee even higher."
