KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Mobile Mammography Unit with UT Medical Center's Cancer Institute has a new "team member."
She's not your average health advocate, but she's drawing a lot of attention and hopefully gets you to get your annual mammogram.
Frostina the snow woman is a cuddly, life-saving soul, with a carrot nose, rosette buttons, a hot pink scarf and a breast cancer awareness pin.
"She's pinked out, she definitely has the right color scheme going on," says Leah Bowling with UT Medical Center.
But she's not just dressing the part, she's getting your attention so you get your mammogram.
"She's here to help spread the message that annual mammograms do save lives and it's the best detection, or best protection for early detection," says Bowling.
Frostina is at the City County building to serve as a reminder.
"To encourage women to take time for themselves. We want women to realize it's important to care for themselves this time of year. We get busy in the winter time caring for others, putting others first, but it's important to take care of ourselves too," says Bowling.
But she's also drawing attention to UT Medical Center's Mobile Mammography unit parked right outside.
"You can run outside to the mobile unit, 20 minutes, you're done," says Trina Gallman, the Wellness and Benefits coordinator for Knox County. She helped organize the event.
"It's extremely important for them to have this opportunity available for them because it's convenient and accessible."
And along with 21 other women, had her annual mammogram.
"The ladies on the unit are very great, they do everything to accommodate you. I believe maybe 2 seconds of discomfort is worth a lifetime of you never know."
Frostina will be making several appearances through the winter months. Before of course, she melts away.
Frostina will be at the Health Living Expo in January.
Six days a week, the Mobile Mammography Unit is at various locations providing mammograms.
