Some things that will cost more in 2012

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - What do gas prices, home insurance premiums, and airline ticket prices all have in common?

They've gone up, or will by the end of the year.

It's a new year, but the same old story. Gas prices rising again.

"We can't tell for sure what gas prices are going to be this afternoon," said Don Lindsey with East Tennessee AAA.

Just a couple of weeks ago, you could fill up for less than $3 a gallon. Now you're lucky to find anything below $3.25.

"Eventually we'll start to see some kind of decrease, but there's no telling when that will be or how far it will go," said Lindsey.

Homeowners insurance premiums will likely rise. But a Farm Bureau Insurance manager says it has little to do with the wind and hail storms in April.

The TVA says its hard to predict the electricity rates, but this is typically the time of year that heat sends bills rising

"Below 78 degrees, for every degree you heat between 72-78 you're affecting your price between 3-5%," said Scott Brooks, spokesperson for TVA.

So, unplug electronics during the day, turn computers off, don't run your washer and dryer between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm.

"With the increase in groceries, gas, utility, all those costs going up, it's important to have emergency preserves," said Anna Seale with CredAbility.

Seale says here are some simple things you can do to save money.
Make a grocery list before you go to the store, carpool or take a bus. Most important, pay off your debts and don't spend what you can't afford to pay for.
