More students than expected enroll at TN Virtual Academy

MAYNARDVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Union County school officials say the state's first virtual academy has enrolled more students than they expected.

The Tennessee Virtual Academy, known as TNVA, offers online classes for Kindergarten to eighth grade students. Any state resident student can apply -- and it's available at no cost the student's family.

Director of Schools Wayne Goforth says the program works well for students who want to work at their own pace or who travel frequently. It could also be an option for those looking outside their local district.

He says students still get to interact with each other in virtual classrooms, and their teacher. The district is hiring 30 teachers to get the program off the ground.

"We've had a lot of skepticism and criticism about Tennessee Virtual Academy. But I think when all is said and done, we'll get the job done," said Goforth.

He stresses students are held to the same standard as those inside the classroom and will take TCAPs and other testing face to face. It isn't a part-time option, either. Students will spend between four to six hours on schoolwork, depending on grade level.
