Oak Ridge (WVLT Sports Overtime) -- Perhaps the only thing faster than Demarcus Rogers was his recruitment to New Mexico.
"The last couple of weeks have been real fast. The offer came out of no where," Rogers told Sports Overtime's Daryl Hobby Tuesday afternoon after signing his letter-of-intent to play for the Lobos.
Wanting to play division one football, the Oak Ridge wide receiver had resigned himself to the fact that I-AA ball was in his future.
That's when destiny stepped in.
Don Colquitt, brother of ex-Vol and Oak Ridge alum Jerry Colquitt got in touch with New Mexico quarterbacks coach Tee Martin--quarterback of the Vols' 1998 national championship team. Colquitt wanted to send a highlight tape of Rogers to Martin.
Rogers told this story concerning the phone call between Colquitt and Martin: "Tee Martin was like, it's signing day, so don't send me any junk now." "No, I'm telling you this guy can play," Colquitt responds.
So the tape was sent. Martin liked what he saw, so did New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley. Next thing Rogers knows, he's making an official visit to Albuquerque. That trip took place this past weekend.
"It's far. It's real far away, but I think I'm ready to take that jump," Rogers said.
New Mexico plays in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos were 4-8 in 2008.
