CLINTON (WVLT) -- Four Knoxville-area volleyball teams played their hearts out Tuesday, but in the process they gave their hearts to a greater cause: breast cancer awareness.
Clinton, Lenoir City, William Blount and Stone Memorial high schools came together in Clinton for Dig Pink, an event held to raise funds for breast cancer research and impart knowledge about the disease, which is the number two killer of adult women in Tennessee.
The teams wore pink uniforms, ribbons and socks. Pink balloons adorned the Clinton High School gymnasium. And several breast cancer survivors were honored between games.
Tonya Davis was one of them. She was diagnosed with breast cancer Oct. 9, 2008. After months of chemo and radiation, Davis is cancer-free, but she's adopted a new mission: to help women who are fighting the disease.
"I had three young girls from Clinton High School ask me to be here tonight, so that's why I'm here," Davis said. "Actually I'd like to try to be a volunteer someday to help other people."
Several players have also been affected by breast cancer.
"Two of my family members had breast cancer and one still has [it]," said Clinton senior Rachel White. "We raise money for a good cause and to some people it means a lot, because some of their family members die."
Teammate Morgan Viles agreed.
"We really look at this game as a big thing in our lives," Viles said. "It takes a lot for us to sit back and finally realize that there are bigger battles we're fighting out there."
