OAK RIDGE (WVLT) -- Call it an extra-sweet night for the Clinton Dragons.

Not only did Andy Shattuck's team beat its archrival; it also won the District 3-AAA championship with a 16-14 victory over Oak Ridge.

The Dragons initially looked like they were going to cruise to a blowout win. Cory Washington intercepted a Bradley Zulliger pass immediately after a Clinton field goal, leading to a Weston Hazelhurst touchdown catch which made the score 10-0 in the first quarter.

But the Wildcat defense held, and neither team scored for the rest of the half.

Late in the third quarter, Oak Ridge got back into the game. Aron Flowers busted into the end zone from inside the 10-yard line, and Clinton's lead shortened to 10-7.

But a 78-yard touchdown run by Darian Stone clinched the win -- and the district title -- for the Dragons, who beat Oak Ridge for the second straight season, but only the second time since 1997.

MARYVILLE -- Most casual observers saw Catholic's meeting with Heritage as a playoff tune-up.

Heritage didn't.

The Mountaineers stifled Catholic's spread attack, beating the Irish 21-7 thanks to a couple key touchdown runs. The win was Heritage's first in six games.
