NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen says he disagrees with remarks by Barack Obama that some small-town voters are bitter over their economic circumstances and "cling to guns and religion" as a result.

Although he had not seen the full text of Obama's remarks, Bredesen told the Chattanooga Times Free Press he feels guns and religion and self-sufficiency are part of the American character.

The Illinois senator made the remarks last week at a private fundraiser in San Francisco. But Bredesen acknowledged that Obama may have misspoke.

Bredesen, who is a Democratic superdelegate, has yet to say whether he will support Clinton or Barack Obama for the nomination.
