SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WVLT) -- An attempted kidnapping sent a Sevier County father on a personal vendetta Monday morning. The dad chased down the accused kidnapper, then, opened fire on him.
Sevier County Sheriff's deputies later caught Kevin Montgomery, 37.

He's now charged with attempting kidnapping and aggravated assault.

Sevier County detectives say no one should do this, but John Walker says he wanted to get the man who he says went after his daughter.

It all started in this Seymour Kroger parking lot on Chapman Highway just after 7:00 am. John Walker's daughter called 9-1-1 after she told dispatchers just barely escaped an attack.

"I was at the Kroger’s on Chapman Highway and I was trying to get into my and then this guy was parked next to me and he grabbed me inappropriately, and tried to put me into his car," the 20-year-old victim said.

The Sevier County Sheriff's Office says "he" was Kevin Montgomery, 37. Before the victim called 9-1-1, she called her father, John Walker.

He says he found Montgomery still in the parking lot, then chased him by car to the E-Z stop just down Chapman Highway...all the while talking with 911 dispatchers.

"Well, he's running through the parking lot at Exxon.
He's trying to go into Boyd's Creek," Walker said.

Walker says he refused to let his daughter's accused kidnapper get away. He

Walker says he tried to confront Montgomery, but Montgomery tried to hit him in his car. That's when Walker opened fire with his 9 mm.

"I just put four rounds into his [expletive] car. He's heading towards Blount County," Walker told dispatchers.

"I might have shot his tire out.... I got a gun to carry a permit....I shot at his tire," he said.

Walker lost him, but Sevier County deputies caught Montgomery at the Zoomer's Market on Winfield Dunn parkway. Detectives warn you not to chase down an accused criminal.

"You understand the father's emotions when his daughter is being abducted, but that's what the police are for," detective Matthew Cubberely said.

Montgomery’s in the Sevier County Jail on $100,000 bond. His next court date hasn't been set.

The investigation into the alleged kidnapping continues.

I have witnessed several crimes and called 911 each time. The times that I did not follow the 'criminal' the police could not find them. When I have followed them and reported their position to 911 operators the 'criminal' was apprehended. The police are correct in saying that it is dangerous to do this, but if we as citizens don't step up to help, who will? With limited resources, the police are hampered in their ability to respond in a timely manner. No fault of theirs, it's just the system. If this 'criminal' drives at you with his car, that is attempted murder with a deadly weapon. If you are carrying, with permit, act accordingly! If it were my daughter, I would followed from a distance to find his home and used a long gun and scope from a grassy knoll!! Go Dad!!!

Way to go dad! You'd better believe if someone tried to kidnap my child they'd be leaving there full of lead.

To Louise, you could not be more wrong! This man had every right to do what he did-if he gets charged I will personally stand up against it.Do you think the cops would have found this kidnapper unless the father led them via 911?Maybe you would be singing a different tune if it had been your daughter.I am a gun owner, and I would have done the same thing.

If Louise were the victim she might have a different view. i agree with the father 100%.

Vendetta?I think that is the wrong word. This man was trying to stop a criminal from getting away.He should be rewarded.Does anyone think this man would have stopped with this girl?No he would have found someone else to kidnap.I myself amm proud of this father for his actions.I am also very glad his daughter is safe.

I think that the father that shot at the accused should be charged with something. He attempted to murder the accused and also put innocent bystanders in jeopardy of being shot as well. What the accused did is wrong but it's also wrong for the father to take matters into his own hands!!! That is why some people should not have permits to carry guns because they try to become vigilantes and take the law into thier own hands. It's not safe!!

I completely understand what the dad was feeling & I don't blame him. A man tried to abduct my daughter in May 2008, and the Knox Co. Police did not even talk to my daughter to get a description. If he had left it soley to the police, nothing would have been done....does anyone edit these news stories? Every story that I read has numerous typos.
