SEVIERVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- A Georgia man is out of the Sevier County Jail on an $800,000 bond today.

David J. Jansen, 46, of Snellville, Georgia, is charged with kidnapping a woman while she was jogging in her Atlanta neighborhood on Tuesday, driving her to a remote cabin off Rocky Flats Road in Sevier County, and raping her.

After she was raped, the victim told police Jansen tied her to the couch and ordered a pizza.

Chris Turner was delivering pizzas that night for the Gatlinburg pizzeria where Jansen placed the order. He arrived at the cabin, and he says as Jansen was paying he noticed the victim tied to the couch.

"I guess she heard a second voice so she realized somebody else was here so she raised up and showed me her hands and pleaded with me," Turner said. ""She pops up over the couch and shows me that her hands are bound with rope. Then she is mouthing to me, ‘please call 911.’"

Turner says he didn't know if the woman was joking or serious.

"I mouthed it back to her asked was she kidding and she rolled her eyes and told me please just call 911."

So Turner left the doorstep after Jansen paid for his pizza--unaware the woman signaled him for help.

Turner pulled out of the driveway and went to neighbor Bill Toomey's door and knocked frantically for help.

"As soon as i started speaking to him i could see immediately he needed some help and we were going to get some help and get on the phone and call 911," Toomey said.

They did and Sevier County deputies went to this house, untied the victim and separated both and began questioning them.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution cites the police report as saying Jansen told police he and the victim were on a “romantic getaway from their spouses” and the woman was sexually aroused by bondage.

Police, however, took Jansen into custody at the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Officers obtained a search warrant for the cabin. They says they discovered evidence which “substantiated the victim’s story.”

Jansen was taken to the Sevier County Jail and charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated rape. He was arraigned and is due back in court on July 17th at 9 a.m.

Turner's still shocked days later, "I couldn't believe it I mean it's just something you never think about I'm glad i could be here to help her or whatever."

"He's a true hero. I mean I tell you what, God put him there and thank God he did," Toomey said.

The victim's husband sent VolunteerTV.com a statement thanking Turner.

We can only report part of it because the rest gives away clues to her identity, and our policy prevents identifying victims of sexual assault."

The victim's husband says, "I must say that the unselfish heroism of the pizza delivery man, not only reinforces that a value system still exists today, but that it is reflected directly by his actions. He literally saved my wife's life, and for that i will forever be in debt to him."

Turner had the chance to meet the victim before she left to go home to Atlanta.

"She steadily said, 'Thank you, thank you you saved my life,'" he said. "She told me that this man was planning on doing something with her because they had the cabin until Saturday."

Investigators are working with the Atlanta Police Department and other agencies on the case.

Well, I hope everyone who was ready to execute this guy and throw brickbats at the judge for granting bail have noticed everything that has happened in the last few days. If this is not a real rape, then she's able to keep lying about stuff and remain anonymous while his name has been slimed as a rapist (yes, he's an adulterer, but perhaps not a rapist) forever. It's high time false accusations for serious crimes like rapes are treated as severely as the punishment would be for the crimes that are knowingly lying about. This is looking more and more like a hoax perpetrated by a sick woman.

Hopefully the local media will also cover new developments that were uncovered yesterday that show this woman has filed 3 false rape complaints in the past 4 years, one of which she's still on probation for. Always wait for all the facts folks - this one's not done yet - and there's no mention of the husband's potential role yet either . go to www.wsbtv.com for the latest info and try to reserve judgment until all the facts come out at all times. Have to admit that the story had a nice hook to it with the "Pizza Guy" involvement which made it go viral nationally, although a 60 mile round trip for a pizza order is a bit strange too, no ?

Not only WHY was he freed on bail, but how the heck did he come up with $800,000?? Is he rich??

Even though the area is considered a tourism zone, the Tennessee folks up there are a solid lot and it doesn't surprise me one bit that Mr. Turner did the right thing. My big question as well as others is why Jansen got out on bail? Isn't kidnapping and transference across state lines a Federal Offence?

Sure hope he shows up for his court date in July, but I kinda doubt it! Why did they give him bail anyway? Ever hear of "no bail"? He doesn't mind driving her 200 miles to rape her, I'm sure he doesn't mind driving more miles to avoid prison.

God picked Chris Turner to be there to save that woman's life. It was a true blessing. She could have been another woman found dead but because of Chris Turner and him believing that she needed help, she was saved. May God Bless them both. As for David Jansen, he will be punished for his crimes.

Nice story, good job by the Mr. Turner....yet although I do not doubt the women was in danger but I wonder if there is more to this story...why did she get int this guys car and not struggle with him initially?? Did he have a weapon?? If this is something that started out as something else and then evolved into a bad situation - maybe Im just cynical - either way the suspect may well be a danger to the community. But would like to hear more..

This guy kidnapped and raped a women and he is on the streets?! What he had to kill her in order to be kept in jail? Chris Turner is a hero.

I just read the story about the woman who faked an abduction and had to pay 1 million dollars in bond, and this disgusting waste gets less?? No doubt he would have killed her, and it would just be one more woman missing. Shame on this justice system.

There's something seriously wrong with a man's logic if he would stop and use a credit card whilst committing a heinous crime.

As a former Justice Dept. employee and a former hostage/rape victim, all I can say is: "Thank you Mr. Turner, you are a good man." It is, however, appalling to me that the Atlanta authorities would grant bail. That is just so risky - I hope the sitting judge orders the suspect be returned to custody at his next appearance until the case is resolved.

not to be blaming this on the victim totaly but what was this married woman doing renting a cabin for the weekend with a man besides her husband. Im sure she knew there was going to be more than watching movies going on so i think the perp should just be charged with kidnapping for not letting her leave, but in this story its pretty clear she went there to commit adultry and i believe if you dont want to get burnt dont dance with the devil. The lord works in mysterious ways and now maybe she has learned adultry is not right and can land you in some pretty bad situations.

I have a combined of 30 plus years in law enforcement and this case in one of the few jaw droppers that I have left. How the heck does a Kidnap, Rape with all the earmarks of a seriel killer rate Bail?! for god sake!

It's crazy that this man is out on bond. If he attacks again, the court will share the blame. It could be years before this goes to trial with all the delay tactics the defense uses. This scum shouldn't get the mercy that he didn't give his victim.

I am a criminal defense attorney - and even I am stunned that this guy was released on bond - he is basically looking at life in prison if convicted of any of the most severe charges they can pin to him. Unless they keep him under 24/7 surveillance and even figure out a way to raise the bail, there is NO WAY he will stick around till the July hearing. This guy probably appeared to the prosecutors and judge as poor - so they didn't put enough thought int it - and then he surprised them by having 800k in assets.

I hope David J. Jansen is sentenced in prison for the rest of his life. Chris Turner deserves a medal!

Why was this rapist/kidnapper given bond?

Posted by: Anne Location: Virginia Beach on May 29, 2009 at 06:52 PM
I am so happy that Mr. Turner got involved. This lady could have died at the hands of this monster. I am glad to know there are people in Gatlinburg like this hero. It makes me fell better about my daugter living there. Mr. Turner, you deserve a metal for saving this young ladies life.

WHY WHY WHY was this man allowed to go free on bond? He probably would have eventually killed her. Sicko.

I am so glad that simple American people are ready to act and help each other in difficult situations. He is the woman's personal hero, but for me he is a simple normal man and this is what makes his actions and the story great. Everyone can and will be a hero in extraordinary circumstances. Much greater than a super hero story :)
