KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's accused killer Lemaricus Davidson's trial, but the victims' families say Davidson's attorneys have put their murdered children on trial.
Davidson's the accused ringleader behind the January 2007 carjacking, kidnapping, rape and killing of Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23.
Multiple times during the first two days of testimony, the defense has suggested the couple abused drugs.
Just seconds after Mary Newsom described identifying her son's burned body, she found herself defending him.
"You don't know where you son bought his pot do you?" a defense attorney asked.
"I didn't know he smoked marijuana," she said.
"You don't know where he bought his amphetamines?"
"I didn't know he did that, either."
"Those kids were totally innocent," Mary Newsom told Volunteer TV. "They're not the ones that should be put on trial."
"They're trying to trash our kids," Channon Christian's mother Deena Chrsitian says. "I'll put my daughter's character up against anyone in the courtroom any day."
The defense has raised questions about marijuana and amphetamines, specifically Adderall.
Knoxville Police identified a single Adderall pill found in a bottle of Christian's anxiety medication. Christian's mom said that pill came from her daughter's friend, but she testified her daughter had taken Adderrall previously before tests.
"(It) just keeps you awake and keeps you focused," Deena Christian testified. "My son actually has to take it."
Monday, the defense got one of Newsom's friends to admit he took some pot from Newsom's truck after Newsom went missing.
Davidson's attorneys haven't spelled out why they keep connecting the victims to the drugs, but the defense has suggested the couple was previously spotted near the area where police say they were held captive.
Both families say they shouldn't have to defend their kids, but they will again, if needed.
"I'll defend my daughter till the day I die," Deena Christian promises.
"I got up there to tell about Chris and tell the truth," Mary Newsom says
The defense has also raised questioned about an empty hydrocodone bottle found in Christian's stolen SUV. Police say they didn't process the bottle the prints. Channon's mom says the bottle belonged to a friend of her daughter who had surgeory. Channon's mom says Channon couldn't take that medication because it made her sick.
The district attorney's office denied our request to see the couple's toxicology report.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) --- Attorneys for accused killer Lemaricus Davidson argued Knoxville Police used flawed forensics to link Davidson to a young Knox County couple's murder.
Defense Attorney David Eldridge questioned KPD finger print analyst Robert Crenshaw's qualifications and examination procedures.
"It's your decision what level of details you examine, isn't it?" Davidson asked Crenshaw.
"I examine whatever is available," Crenshaw said.
Davidson has pleaded not guilty to the January 2007 carjacking, rape, and killing of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.
Davidson's the second of four defendants to go to trial for the couple's death.
Prosecutors says police have identified Davidson's palm prints on three of the five trash bags wrapped around Christian's body stuffed in a trashcan.
But Eldridge pointed out Crenshaw wasn't able to identify any prints on the two bags closest to Christian's body.
While being questioned by prosecutors, Crenshaw testified Davidson's palm on the outer-most bag was "consistent with" someone "lifting" a weighted bag.
The defense objected and pressed Crenshaw during cross-examination.
"You certainly don't know when that garbage bag was removed from the box....and you don't know how long the print you say belongs to Mr. Davidson has been on the bag?" Eldridge asked.
"I don't," Crenshaw responded.
Eldridge also said Crenshaw was unable to identify any prints from the bag around Christian's head.
"The reason for that was, there had been a lot of purging, Ms. Christian had done, fluid on it," Crenshaw testified.
The defense also continued suggesting the victims may have abused drugs.
Eldridge had Crenshaw identify a pill bottle of anxiety medication prescribed to Christian. Crenshaw testified a single Adderall pill was in the bottle with the prescription.
The defense also asked whether or not Crenshaw fingerprinted a bottle of Hydrocone prescribed to Christian's friend that was found in Christian's stolen SUV. Crenshaw testified he hadn't.
Monday, Defense Attorney Doug Trant got one of Newsom's friends to admit he took marijuana from Newsom's truck after Newsom went missing.
Hugh Newsom, Christopher Newsom's father, told Volunteer TV the line of questionning yesterday was "irrelevant."
The defense hasn't explained why it's raising questions about drug use.
