Christian-Newsom Murder Trial: Why So Long Before Trial? Save Email Print
Reporter: Kim Bedford

Knoxville (WVLT) - With the murder suspects not expected to be on trial until at least next May, many are asking why so late?

Volunteer TV’s Kim Bedford takes a look at what goes into preparing for a complex trial like this one.

There are so many details that have to be in place.

Judge Richard Baumgartner is presiding over the case and he tells us everyone on all sides was in agreement on the trial date.

He couldn't speak about the process, so we went to Judge Mary Beth Leibowitz to find out what will most-likely happen between now and next may.

"Sometimes I think it's like choreographing a ballet and making sure everybody's foot's in the right place to do it correctly,” Criminal Court Judge Mary Beth Leibowitz says precision is key for a case like the double-murder carjacking that would rarely go to trial in just a few months. "Most of the time a complex case needs a good six months to get all the information gathered together."

Information, evidence and a lot of different people involved.

"So many defendants, so much complexity to what the D.A.'s office, what the sheriff's department still has yet to do." Judge Leibowitz says calendars for anyone over the murder case will be jam-packed with meeting dates throughout the next year. "You've got to coordinate all the logistics, all the evidence, all the officers who need to testify and all the witnesses who need to testify need to be available."

She also pointed out one thing you may not have noticed, you'll never see a big case like this one take place this fall or next fall.

"You can't set a complex trial during football season because you can't get hotel rooms if a jury is sequestered,” Judge Leibowitz says.

And rushing into four separate trials can come with some major consequences.

"Undiscovered evidence or evidence that wasn't turned over or laboratory analysis that wasn't finished,” Judge Leibowitz says.

Details that the families of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom will have to painfully wait out.

"It's terribly hard because they're waiting for that day when they have their say or see justice done,” Judge Leibowitz also mentioned that selecting a jury for such a high profile case like the double murder will be a very lengthy process in itself.

But getting everything right and prepared is important on many so many different levels here.

the rage that consumes me about this is something I can't explain. My daughter knew Christian and even after all this time I still don't know how to answer her questions. The pictures of these 4 which I can't even call "people" bring an emotion in me I didn't know I could experience. As I'm writing this comment the local news is covering the events in court today. Seeing their faces in the news makes me want to see them dead. I know now I am not the christian I thought I was and don't even want to ask to be forgiven for the way I'm feeling. The expression on Boyd's face is emotionless or maybe it's fear. I can only hope. I wonder how much of a swagger the other supects will have when ther're are finally brought to trial. I wonder how impowered the rest of them will feel when their asses are close to death. I only wish I could be there for that.

Shame on the National Media. I am truly touched and haunted by faces of two beautiful souls I nver met. WHY WHY WHY I don't think that this STARTED as a "hate crime" but that IS how it ended!! If not for race, sex then HATRED shear hatred and direagrd for this man and woman. How dare they? These animals are PARENTS do they want this to happen to their children, their sisters, mothers?? Do they even have the ability to care? I am not an advocate for the Death penalty normally...but this crime AND crimes against innocent children should end in death!!! God should have mercy on their souls (wonder how many are finding God and getting saved in jail?) I have been in jail..it is sad ... these animals will be looked up to by the black inmates and hated by the racists! They don't deserve OUR tax money to make them comfortable!

i saw a movie documentary called "faces of death" long time ago. there is this part the movie where family members of a murder victim were given the "opportunity" to cast judgement to the killer. in this case, the brother of the deceased was asked to stand infront of the killer, pointed a gun to his forehead then shot him to death. for these 4 evil savaged people, they should suffer what they have done to channon and chris, then let their family finish off their punishment.

in responce to the lack of coverage by the "news" medias of a crime that if the role of the races were reversed would be aired constanly start contacting the advertisers on the "news" medias channels and the "news' medias them selves and let them know that youll be deleting their stations and canceling your subscriptions if their not going to report it they same way they would if the roles were reversed ( and i dont mean a passing referance at 4a.m.)

Funny, I can't remember seeing Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton anywhere near these trogladytes. I wonder why? Maybe there is no money or face time in it for either of them.

I feel very sorry for the families.I know the Coleman girl.she was raised much better than that.I guess when you get caught up in the wrong activity, you have to pay your dues.My heart goes out to the young couple who died."When you do the crime you should expect to do the time, whatever it may be".

Thank you for covering this story. I am distantly related to Christian Newsome. I am tired of watching Fox news and hearing about Nicole, Brittany or Lohan. Thank you for covering a real story about a tragedy that hurt many people.

I pray the family can endure the pain of the trail. They'll already been through more than one could stand. As for the suspects, the death penalty should definitely be on the table. This is the kind of crime I'm sure it was intended for. Question - Where are Sharpton and Jackson during all of this?

Where is the national media attention?

Posted by: Shirley Location: Jonesboro, GA on Sep 20, 2007 at 07:27 PM
Thank you for covering this story for all us. I want these murderers to pay the ultimate price for their crime. Please keep this story going. Expecially next year before the trial comes up. The officials want a "fair" trial? Me, too. If they get a fair trial, they'll get the death penalty, which is too good for them. They need done to them what they did to these beautiful peopled!! But, revenge is God's.

May God have them in the cradle of His arms and bless their families with His presence and peace! May God have mercy on these savage killers soul - but I also hope they burn in eternal hell for their crimes!!

what a horrible and sick crime, why isn't this on the Dateline? You cannot help love media bias.... Remember the Duke Lacross incident? Where are the finger pointers now? They should be pointing at themselves. A Beautiful Couple and 4 savages. Absolutely Sick!

As a corrections officer, I see this type of perpetrators every day and as one of the viewers put it in their comments, the tax payer foots the bill for food, medical, clothing, housing, education and even entertainment. Most of these people think they did no wrong and try to justify why the did, what they did. I would like to know who foots the bill for the families of the victims ? I'm sure no one did or does for their emotional stress, financial out puts for funerals, their constant daily struggle of not being able to see their love ones and now the lag of time to get these violators to justice. I too received the information about this case thru an email from a friend that lost one of their children by a brutal act such as this and nearly 2 years later still no resolve. The perp sits in a county jail and demands a new lawyer about every other month because he's not getting the deal he wants. If these suspects do not get the justice they deserve and most of all quickly, then this case will fall by the way side and we will be keeping these types up for the rest of their lives with what I expect as no real closure for the victims family. God bless the family !!

Posted by: DIna Location: New York on Jul 12, 2007 at 09:31 PM
I am outraged at the brutality of this crime. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims family, friends, and all loved ones. Justice will prevail!!! Where is sharpton and Jackson NOW!!!

Posted by: Evelyn Location: Washington DC on Jul 9, 2007 at 11:34 AM
I too, like someone else posted here on this site, found out about this crime through a email that is being circulated in our area. I do believe that this was a crime of hate towards this young couple. How else can you explain the urinating on the victims? To degrade them as much as possible! Spitting and urinating on a human is as low as you can go, showing a complete and total loathing for them. What possible reason could there be for that? They didn't know them personally to have such a hatred from what I have read. Unfortunatly, we will never know what racial slurs that were *more than likely* used by the suspects on the young couple, because they are unable to speak of what really happened to them that horrible night as they are dead. Time will only tell if the entire truth comes out in this trail. I hope for the sake of justice that they are sentenced to the full extent of the law, if found guilty of this horrific crime. And one person who mentioned how this has nothing to do with race, pointing out the OJ case, please don't even try it! OJ was rich and famous and even DNA proved he did it and most of America knows that also, both black and white! And let's not forget...HE GOT AWAY WITH IT!!!!

Posted by: RONNIE Location: NY on Jul 3, 2007 at 04:29 PM
I cant believe that football comes before justice in knoxville tenn! This young couple was so beautiful and full of life and to be taken out like that(torture,gang-raped,kidnapped,robbed,strangled and shot by thugs is unacceptable and then for the people in CHARGE OF JUSTICE to put football season before justice, what hope do our leaders give us when they are bought off even at the price of justice! HANG EM HIGH-ALL 5 thugs who did this crime to our children!-TIME TO MAKE THE STATES IN CHARGE OF JUSTICE MAKE A STATEMENT TO THE DRUG LORDS AND KILLERS THAT IF YOU MESS WITH OUR CHILDREN WE WILL TAKE YOUR LIFE WITH NO DELAY! IF THIS WAS A BLACK COUPLE GANG RAPED AND TORTURED BY 5 WHITE HILLBILLIES IT WOULD BE ALL OVER THE MEDIA-IS THE NEWS LIBERALLY BIAS?-WHAT ABOUT JUSTICE FOR CHANNON AND CHRIS? DOES FOOTBALL COME BEFORE THE FAMILIES WHO STILL CRY EVERYDAY FOR THE ONES THEY HAVE LOST? SHAME ON THE STATE OF TENNESSE FOR NOT MAKING THIS A NUMBER ONE PRIORITY! FOOTBALL,SCREW FOOTBALL! WHAT ABOUT PRIDE,JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY? I SINCERELY WITH ALL MY HEART EXTEND MY PRAYERS AND LOVE TO THE FAMILIES OF THIS ATROCITY.

Posted by: John Location: Tennessee on Jun 28, 2007 at 12:27 PM
If there has ever been a crime commited worthy of the death penalty this is it. I firmly believe that race was an issue. If the killers had been white and the victims black, there would have been a Jessie and Al fiasco

Posted by: Sally Markham Location: Knoxville on Jun 26, 2007 at 10:32 PM
That's it with us we are out of here. I will not expose my children to this type of living. These poor familes of the victims. So sad I will not let it happen to us we are leaving here.

Posted by: MEL Location: NEW JERSEY on Jun 12, 2007 at 11:33 PM
THIS IS THE JUSTICE SYSTEM, JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED.WE,THE TAXPAYERS HAVE TO FOOT THE BILL FOR THESE CRETIAN SLUGS THAT CHANNON AND CHRISTIAN CRY OUT FROM THE GRAVE FOR THEIR QUICK DEATH SENTENCE,HOWEVER RANDY THE DA HAS UNTIL 9/1 TO DECIDE.DO IT NOW RANDY,HAVE THE GUTS THAT THE FAMOUS TENNESSE SHERIFF HAD BUFORD PUSSER WALK TALL RANDY,DONT BE A WUSS AND POLITICAL CORRECT LIBERAL GIVE EM WHAT THEY DESERVE!!!!

Posted by: Debi Location: Toledo, OH on Jun 11, 2007 at 02:22 PM
I cannot believe how hideous this crime was, I will say a prayer for ALL the families! For the parents of the victims, because they shouldn't have lost their children this way, and for the parents of the revolting creatures who committed the crimes for I believe their children will end their lives in an even nastier way. Anyone who says that this crime isn't somehow based in race has their head in the sand. I work with Juvenille Deliquents and I see, on a daily basis, the hatred between these kids! White, black, hispanic....it doesn't matter... When one of my students was busted for race-on-race assault -AT 13 YEARS OLD- I asked him why. His answer was "because I can"

Posted by: Wessner Location: Shelbyville, TN on Jun 8, 2007 at 12:53 PM
Why has this horrible crime not had national news coverage???? National media is all over Paris Hilton and her idiotic exploits, not to mention the endless and needless coverage of the death of Anna-Nicole Smith, yet these two young people have basically been ignored by the national media. These murders were heinous, and the suspects so not deserve to be sheltered by the media.

Posted by: Sally Location: Texas on Jun 6, 2007 at 03:16 PM
I just wonder why we've not heard a peep out of the major network news over this atrocity! I just cannot believe this story!! It's too outrageous!! Where is the outrage of the public???

Posted by: Rita Shelton Location: Greene ville on Jun 6, 2007 at 11:23 AM

I think the judge should be on trial with those jerks for such a stupid comment. "You can't set a complex trial during football season because you can't get hotel rooms if a jury is sequestered,” Judge Leibowitz

Posted by: JW Location: TEXAS on Jun 4, 2007 at 01:51 PM
I just heard about this case today. I haven't heard anything through the media in the past 5 months. First of all, my thoughts and prayers go out to both families. I can’t even imagine the anguish they are feeling. Unfortunately, I heard about it through an email that is being passed along just so people will acknowledge this tragedy. I'm completely horrified by the crimes that have been committed. I don’t believe this is racially motivated. I believe it takes an individual with pure malevolence within their hearts to do such an act. Everyone else has already said what needed to be said about “the football season” and I agree, lame excuse. I do understand that a case of this magnitude needs time to develop. There is so much information that has to be sorted out and sifted through, that way when it comes to trial then both parties will be ready. Think about it 2 murders, 5 suspects, 2 crime scenes, several charges, and so much evidence. Probably in this yearlong wait, HOPEFULLY witnesses will come forward. Again, I AM TRULY SORRY FOR THE FAMILIES of the victims and I hope soon, that this pain will be laid to rest with their children. For the individuals who committed this crime, I hope you get what you deserve. Don’t waste our tax dollars on keeping these individuals fed/clothed/housed. I can personally think of better ways our tax dollars can be spent. Try the homeless or the victims of such crimes as these. If you’re a state that gives the death penalty then make it effective immediately. Don’t let the criminals sit around and live off of us. And one other thing, I don’t believe there is such thing as “an accessory” to a crime. If someone can stand back and watch it happen, then they are just as guilty as the person who committed the crime. They know right from wrong.

This is a travisty to our country and our justice system. This is horrifying to think that these unspeakable acts were commited on these two people and their families and then to have to wait a year for the trial to even begin is rediculous...

Posted by: Butch Location: New York on Jun 2, 2007 at 10:59 AM
Trial delayed due to hotel rooms not being available for jury during football season??? This is absurd! Two young innocent people have been horribly tortured, mutilated and murdered!! It is indeed a sad day for "Big Orange".This fiasco will have a negative impact on Knoxville and the state of Tennessee for years to come.I was born in Oak Ridge,Tenn 18 miles east of Knoxville and had looked forward to retiring in the surrounding area ,think I'll stay in New York, they are much better at priortizing. May god bless and comfort the family's of the victims.

This is the most hainous crime that I have ever heard of and my prayers go out to the victims and the families. I wish we lived in a country that believed in an eye for an eye, then see how cocky these animals are. I hope justice is served and they receive the death sentence so our tax dollars dont support them for the rest of thier lives.

Posted by: Mel Location: Ellensburg, Washington on May 30, 2007 at 08:10 PM
This is a hate/race crime; deserves the death penalty for all convicted; and the white glove and silent treatment it is receiving is absolutely despicable...... C'mon, Tennessee! You have a prouder past than that.

Posted by: P. Smith Location: Sac.California on May 30, 2007 at 06:59 PM
The type of crime committed calls for the death penalty! There should be no other way, except it should happen within a year

Posted by: Angala Location: Oregon on May 30, 2007 at 06:59 PM
this is so sick. i think all these people deserve the worst kind of punishment. this is sounds like is was something right out of a horror movie. how sad. and what a terrible terrible way to die.i cant even express my anger for the 5 souless people. just reading this will give me nightmares. my heart goes out the the victims and the familys. may they finally rest in piece

I read the details of this gruesome case and really wish this country had laws that bypass trials and go directly to execution of the animals who commit such heinous crimes. I feel for the families and especially the victims, and somehow, someone should make reparations for these losses.

Someone needs to get off of their fannie's and get this trial going immediately. this is not rite NOT RITE at all

Posted by: Lucille Marie Location: Ohio on May 24, 2007 at 02:59 PM
I can understand the wait, but almost a year later, is that called due process, I really doubt it. The question on my mind is, didn't they have evidence prior to the grand jury indictment? They had to have some, otherwise it wouldn't of led to an indictment of those people. I'm not saying just because it was a race issue, but that just maybe that it is true that they need more time to gather evidence against these people. Yes, I said people. Unfortunately we live in a world that is prejudical towards other races, but I can say for myself I am not. God put everyone on this earth for a reason, maybe they did not know their reason, but they are the ones that can say yes or no. It's a freedom of choice. Thanks for letting me have my say

Posted by: Kevin Location: Carson City, NV on May 24, 2007 at 10:13 AM
So then justice must wait for the football season? That is the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard. The victims families will continue to suffer even longer. N-I-C-E-! Justice is swift, unless it's football season in Tennessee.

Posted by: Jay Location: NC on May 23, 2007 at 01:47 PM
Wow, you see what kind of priorities Knoxville, TN has. They are more worried about football and no hotels than the trial
