KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The mothers of a murdered Knox County couple have shared their loss with a jury.

Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom were kidnapped, raped and murdered in January 2007. Their mothers testified at defendant George Thomas' trial Wednesday afternoon.Thomas is the third of four defendants to go on trial for the couple's death.

Both mothers identified a slew of clothing and other personal items that belonged to their children. All of which, according to prosecutors, was found in the Chipman Street home where they were killed, along with Christian's body.

"That was Chris' belt." Mary Newsom said, identifying the belt that once bound her son's burned body. "Chris was a good-looking kid. Just nice looking, beautiful to me."

From the stand, Newsom shared the final moments she saw her son alive nearly three years ago.

"He was happy, excited to spend the night with Channon," she said. Channon Christian, her's son's girlfriend and the other victim.

"Those are the pants she left in that night," said Christian's mother Deena, testifying how her anxiety grew along with the hours the couple was missing. Authorities, she said, didn't seem to care.

"The detective finally called the house, and he sounded like I was more of a nuisance because he was dealing with a robbery. We had words. He basically told me if we wanted something done we should do it ourselves," she said.

Newsom also described her growing fears: "I called over and over again. Chris, it's Mom, call me back. Please answer your phone."

That night, Newsom said, she was sleepless. And many she says still are, as both victims' families fight for justice.

Thomas' then-girlfriend is set to testify Thursday. She was in Knoxville with Thomas, at the Chipman Street house, but said she left before the crimes.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Jurors took a virtual trip Wednesday inside what's been called the "house of horrors" Chipman Street.

Defense attorneys say George Thomas admits to being inside that house, but he's pleaded not guilty to all of the crimes police say took place there.

Thomas is accused of carjacking, kidnapping raping and killing Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 21, in January 2007.

The prosecution is trying to point a finger at Thomas without finger print evidence, which is a point the defense stressed and tried to exploit in the courtroom Wednesday.

Police found Christian's body stuffed inside a trash can in the Chipman Street house.

Defense attorneys have acknowledged that Thomas was at the Chipman Street house the weekend of the crimes, but prosecutors argued Thomas knew what others were doing in a home that only had cloths for doors.

Knoxville Police Department SWAT officer Keith Debow testified, "The only interior door I can remember is there's a folding door here, and it was open."

Prosecutors plan to prove Thomas is criminally responsible for the couple's death. However, they lack any fingerprint evidence to point directly at Thomas.

Police fingerprint analyst Dan Crenshaw testified that he didn't identify Thomas' prints on any items in this case. The defense stressed how much police tried.

Defense attorney Thomas Dillard says, "I believe you said you did a significant amount of work in this case."

"The whole crime lab did, yes sir," Crenshaw replied.

Both Mrs. Christian and Mrs. Newsom, the victims' mothers, took the stand Wednesday. They shared the final moment they had with their children, and the details of their frantic search to find them.
