UPDATE 5/3/10 5:50 p.m.:
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Three years after the murders of a young Knoxville couple, the trial for the fourth and final suspect is underway, and day one has come to a close.
Vanessa Coleman is the last defendant to stand trial for the carjacking, kidnapping, rape and murder of Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23, in January 2007.
Testimony went on all day Monday as the prosecution started laying out their case against Coleman. She maintains her innocence, but a conviction could land her on death row.
Security was very tight as Vanessa Coleman entered the courtroom Monday to stand trial.
Judge Richard Baumgartner started the day by admonishing the 12 jurors and 4 alternates hearing the case to wait until the end of the trial to form any opinions about Coleman's guilt or innocence.
"Vanessa Coleman did unlawfully kill Hugh Christopher Newsom during the perpetration of kidnapping of Channon Christian," prosecutor Takisha Fitzgerald told jurors.
Prosecutors read each of the dozens of counts against Coleman.
"She's never laid her hands in her life on a gun at any time, any place, anywhere," Defense attorneys contend.
Defense attorneys maintain Coleman didn't participate in the killings, and was also held against her will by others already convicted in the case.
Volunteer TV's gavel-to-gavel live streaming coverage of the trial continues Tuesday at 9 a.m.

NOON UPDATE
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The families of a young Knoxville couple, killed more than three years ago, are back in court for the trial of the fourth suspect in the case.
Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom were kidnapped, carjacked, raped and murdered in January 2007.
Vanessa Coleman is the last person to be tried for the crimes, and the only woman to stand trial and face the death penalty in the case.
Nine women and three men will decide Coleman's fate.
Last year, Lemaricus Davidson was sentenced to death for his role, while Letalvis Cobbins and George Thomas were sentenced to life in prison.
Eric Boyd is serving time in a federal prison for being an accessory after the murders. He helped Davidson hide from police.
The victims' family members have said they believe Boyd played a more direct role in the killings, and they expect that he'll eventually be tried for their children's murders.
