KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Day one of jury deliberations ended the same way it began: With no decision as to the fate of Vanessa Coleman. Coleman is charged with the January 2007 carjacking, kidnap, rape and murder of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.
While the jury deliberated, family members of both victims took the witness stand to read their emotional victim impact statements for the judge's approval.
"When Chris was born we were just delighted," Mary Newsom said. "A boy to carry on the family name. That beautiful boy grew into a fine young man."
Channon's mom, Deena Christian, said, "The last thing a parent should ever have to do is bury a child."
Before the families gave their heart wrenching accounts, the jury had its first question within three hours of deliberating.
Jurors wanted to know if they should assume that criminal responsibility--the crux of the prosecution's case--should be a consideration for all charges against Coleman.
Legal expert and Knoxville defense attorney Bruce Poston tells Volunteer TV that the question is not a good sign for the defense.
"It signals that the defense is in trouble," he says.
But Coleman's lawyer, Ted Lavit, is optimistic.
"it just indicated that the jury seemed to be carefully reviewing the court's instruction," Lavit says.
A few hours later, jurors ask the legal meaning of the word "perpetration."
"You should apply the normal or common definition of the term 'perpetration,' (to this case)," Baumgartner said.
"Common meaning-- it means do," Poston explains. "(It means) you did something, or attempted to do it, and that tells you they're still on first degree felony murder."

UPDATE
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The jury in the Vanessa Coleman double murder and rape trial wrapped up its first full day of deliberations Wednesday. But not before asking two questions legal expert Bruce Poston said hurts the defense.
First jurors wanted to know if criminal responsibility could apply to all counts. Then the panel asked the judge to define perpetration.
Poston says the questions signal jurors are focused on the prosecution's premise that while Coleman didn't do anything, she's responsible for the actions of the three males already convicted in the case.
Jurors resume deliberations Thursday at 9 A.M.

UPDATE
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The families of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom are preparing to read their victim impact statements in court, outside the jury's view, so Judge Richard Baumgartner can approve them, in the event that Vanessa Coleman is convicted on the capital murder counts in the young couple's death.
If Coleman is convicted on the death-penalty eligible counts against here, the jury will hear the families' statements at the sentencing hearing.

UPDATE
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Just before noon Wednesday, only a few hours after deliberations in Vanessa Coleman's double-murder trial began, jurors re-entered the courtroom to ask the judge a question. They wanted to know whether the laws surrounding criminal responsibility could apply to all charges against Coleman.
Prosecutors have tried to convince jurors that, while Coleman may not have played an active role in the torture killings of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, she is criminally responsible for their deaths.
As for the jury's question, Judge Richard Baumgartner simply read the law pertaining to criminal responsibility. The jury foreman told the court that he was satisfied with that as an answer.
Coleman faces the possibility of the death penalty.
