MARYVILLE (WVLT) -- At some point, high school football followers will just have to admit it:

Maryville might never be beaten.

The Red Rebels avoided defeat yet again Friday, outlasting archrival Alcoa 20-13 in front of nearly 10,000 fans at Shields Stadium to win their 62nd consecutive game.

Maryville also extended its series streak to eight; Alcoa hasn't beaten the Rebs since 2000.

The Tornadoes (1-1) cracked the scoreboard first in the first quarter, but Maryville took advantage of an Alcoa fumble to take a 10-7 lead in the first half. Then George Quarles' squad intercepted a Chase James pass, turning the turnover into a field goal to take a 13-7 halftime lead.

\Gary Rankin's squad caught the Rebs in the third quarter, but missed the extra point to keep the game tied at 13. A fourth-quarter Maryville score gave the 4A powerhouse the decisive points, as the Red Rebel defense did its job to secure the 20-13 win.
____________
LAFOLLETTE -- The Campbell County Cougars are for real.

The Cougars (1-0) stymied the Powell defense to the tune of 41 points, extending a six-point halftime lead into the winning 41-22 margin thanks to timely turnovers and an efficient ground attack.

Quarterback Phillip Wells passed for a first-half touchdown and led the Cougar offense past the Panthers (0-1), who beat Campbell County in a blowout last year.
______________
CLINTON -- The Battle of Clinton almost had a new winner this year.

But Anderson County, who has dominated the series with the Clinton Dragons, held on for a 34-32 win in a seesaw contest at the Mavs' home field.

The Mavs (1-0) have won every game against Clinton (0-1) since 1999, and they've got receiver Joshua Wilson to thank for the win. Wilson hauled in three Paul Longmire touchdown passes to lead his team to the win.
