NASHVILLE (AP) -- In the middle of one of its worst seasons in history, Tennessee still found a way to beat instate rival Vanderbilt.

Eric Berry returned his seventh interception of the season for a touchdown to help the Vols beat the Commodores 20-10 on Saturday.

The win helped Tennessee (4-7, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) avoid a school-worst eight losses for at least one week while Vanderbilt (6-5, 4-4) missed a chance to capture its second five-win SEC season.

The Vols were hoping to honor Phillip Fulmer with wins over Vanderbilt and in the season finale against Kentucky. Fulmer announced earlier this month that he was being pushed out as coach at the end of the season after 17 seasons with Tennessee.

Fulmer has only lost once in 16 games against Vanderbilt, a 28-24 decision in Knoxville in 2005 -- Fulmer's only other losing season.

Berry holds the SEC's single-season and career records with 265 interception return yards for the season and 487 for his career. His pick today was the 12th of his career.

Tennessee's offense, which ranked only ahead of Vanderbilt's in the SEC with 267.1 yards per game, found life -- scoring in the double digits for the first time since Oct. 18.

Eleven games into the season, Tennessee debuted two new faces at quarterback. Redshirt freshman B.J. Coleman took over on the third drive of the game, sharing snaps with Berry.

In the second quarter, Coleman and Lennon Creer combined for eight straight rushes for 57 yards. On third-and-1, Montario Hardesty broke through a pile at the line of scrimmage and trotted into the end zone to give Tennessee a 7-0 lead with 11:25 before halftime.

Hardesty broke a 27-yard run, his longest of the season, setting up a 25-yard field goal by Daniel Lincoln to put Tennessee up 10-0 with 7:45 in the second quarter.

Five plays later, Berry picked off a pass by Chris Nickson and returned it 45 yards to give Tennessee a 17-0 lead.

By halftime, Tennessee had 122 yards of offense compared to Vanderbilt's 25 and overall, all but 21 of Tennessee's 243 total yards on offense were on the ground. Of Vanderbilt's 213 yards, only 25 yards were by rushing.

When a 31-yard field goal by Bryant Hahnfeldt and a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown by Reshard Langford cut Tennessee's lead to 20-10 in the third quarter, the Commodores appeared poised for yet another comeback push.

With six minutes left in the game, Mackenzi Adams connected with Justin Wheeler on an 18-yard pass and converted fourth-and-9 with a 21-yard pass to D.J. Moore.

But when Vanderbilt was faced with fourth-and-10 on the Tennessee 39, Adams' pass to Sean Walker fell one yard shy of the first down, ending the Commodores' hopes.

Vanderbilt struggled the entire first half behind Nickson. On his six drives as starter, the Commodores went backward on three of them, went three and out on another and turned the ball over twice.

Vanderbilt got the ball on the Tennessee 34 when Lewis picked off Vols starter Jonathan Crompton on the second play of the game, but the Commodores lost eight yards on the play thanks to an illegal block in the back penalty by Brandon Barden.

Adams took over for Nickson on the last drive of the first half and successfully moved Vanderbilt 26 yards but threw an interception to Brent Vinson at the Vanderbilt 34. Vinson returned it 69 yards to set up a 24-yard field goal by Lincoln to give Tennessee a 20-0 lead at halftime.

Adams finished 18-for-38 for 192 yards and the interception.

I can say that i was cheering for vandy because it does not matter now he is out of here come sat nite. Anyone that likes to watch football on tv is having a hard time watching this team with the exception of Eric Berry. just sad he has to play with a team that is this untalented.

Posted by: Brad Location: Knoxville on Nov 24, 2008 at 04:18 PM I personally will be so glad when fulmer is gone. It was a disgrace to me that he said the last few weeks was like a funeral. I think he needs a reality check. People are losing there jobs all around this state and all he can say is it feels like a funeral. Give me a break. He will be making $ 125,000 a month for the next 6 years. Then some people in town wanting people to wear black for the game. They will be lucky if 75,000 show up. My tickets will sit in a drawer until he is gone. ======================================= That's sweet of you. Don't watch the game on TV, either. I suppose you were cheering for Vanderbilt.

And can we please let the Spurrier to UT rumor die. We do not need Steve Spurrier nor would he succeed here. Steve's better days are long gone. Our new coach is currently at Texas Tech (I hope) or Cincinnati. At the end of the day, it will be one of those 2.

Hamiton did what had to be done. I appreciate what Fulmer has done for UT but his time is up. We have fallen to far. I don't understand how a win over Vandy makes anyone think things could get better. When you look at our offense, they only really produced 10 points. You got a TD from an int. and another int. set us up for another TD and we couldn't get that. Thanks for the memories Phil, I hope the best for you, but it's time to go.

Will you folks stop begging,FAT-HEAD Fulmer is gone, now find a coach that will win. Can we still get Spurrier from SC? We can match or better his salary. Bring Steve home.

I guess if you don't put any of our blogs in, Fulmer definitely gets fired! Well, let's hear it for the "Obama Team!" You all just put in what you want us to see! Thanks! You've heard the last from me!

Now vol fans think thay should be #1 after beating vandy. I think Tennessee should contact Spurrier of South Carolina to turn this Tennessee program around. Thanks. P.S Fulmer quite crying and man up.

You treated Fulmer badly, Hamilton! You ought to be run out of town on a rail! Fulmer needs to be there one more year to straighten things out. Do something Alumni. He's the heart of UT football!

Mike Hamilton stuck a knife in Phillip Fulmer's heart by asking him to resign... especially in the middle of the season! Fulmer really does "bleed orange!" That's evident! He can hardly talk about UT now without getting all choked up. Hamilton, you're a dog! (And I would like to apologize to all dogs for saying that, because you're a miserable excuse for any canine). If you're so smart, Hamilton, why don't you sober up Johnny "Mumbles" Majors and offer him the job? Then "the tale will have been told!" Keep Phillip Fulmer and keep "folks in the stands." I'm not going to waste my time watching 3-4 wanna-be coaches for 3-4 more years trying to "play in the SEC." Hamilton, you're the problem, not the solution!

Mike Hamilton, you really screwed up the University of Tennessee and Phillip Fulmer by "pulling this stunt" in the middle of the season! The majority of UT fans will never forgive you for that! Maybe you can explain to the UT Alumni, donors and boosters just why season tickets sales will be down in the coming years! Give Fulmer a chance to fix the problem.. it's not too late, you dingaling!

Posted by: Get the right guy for the job! Location: Knoxville on Nov 23, 2008 at 10:06 AM
If you're going to replace Fulmer, at least get a real coach to do the job. Who are these "yo-yo's" at NC, Texas Tech, and of all places "Cincinnati?" If you're going to be a bear, be a grizzly! Get Spurrier! I know... he's an ass, but he's the best coach for the job! Offer him the right amount of money, and he'll fix this mess right away! The Cincinnati, North Carolina, and Texas Tech coaches are bear cubs compared to Spurrier! They'll never make it in the SEC! Wake up and do the right thing. If you just have to get rid of Fulmer, get the best guy to replace him... not some "mickey mouse wanna' be's" from "Dilbert University!" If you're going to do that, make Dave Clawson the Head Coach at UT! That makes about as much sense! Wake up before it's too late!

The "Who's Who" at the University of Tennessee is looking at the Texas Tech Coach, the North Carolina Coach, and the Cincinnati Coach to be the next head coach at UT? That's absolutely ridiculous! It makes about as much sense as hiring the Richmond Coach (Dave Clawson) to be the Off. Coordinator at Tennessee! If you don't know it by now, Alumni.. you never will! Phillip Fulmer bleeds orange! If he was instrumental in hiring Clawson, then that was a mistake... but give him a chance to fix it! It's not too late to "reconsider" and keep the best coach UT's had in many years! Keep Fulmer, let him "clean house" and if he doesn't do better next year, then he does need to retire. But give the guy a chance! You owe it to him for the big screwing you gave him mid-year by asking for his resignation. Do the right thing.. give Fulmer a chance to fix the problem. Don't bring somebody in from one of these "mediocre" schools to do the impossible. KEEP FULMER!

VOL ALUMNI... it's not too late to save this sinking ship! Fulmer is not the problem! Okay, he made some bad "hires," especially with "Mickey Mouse Clawson and his merry band." But Philip Fulmer needs to stay at UT! ALUMNI, reconsider before Hamilton gets a coach that's got to completely start over and really screw things up! We're going to miss Coach Fulmer! I know Hamilton is just the "go-between," but he's the one that should have fought to keep Fulmer. Hamilton needs to be fired for that! ALUMNI, keep Philip Fulmer! I hope you can see the embarrassment and hurt you've caused UT and Fulmer, what with the way this so called "resignation" in the middle of the season was handled! FULMER IS NOT THE PROBLEM! Keep Philip Fulmer! Cannot you see what pain you've caused this man? He's more dedicated to that football program than any coach since Bob Neyland! I for one will not spend my money on season tickets watching a "miscarriage" 4-5 years with a new outfit trying to coach the Vols!

Like to make one last suggestion for us in the new search for a coach....let him know we need a quarterback! The receiving corps too are underachieving. There is some quality to them, but they are not hustling nor showing knowledge of their scheme! Altogether, that equals disaster for an offense......and the offensive line isn't playing well either. So the knew coach has his hands full with the offense.
