(govolsXtra.com & WVLT Reports) -- Tennessee recruiting coordinator/defensive line coach Ed Orgeron has been linked to the vacant defensive coordinator position at Southern California.
It is unclear if Orgeron is a serious candidate or would accept the position.
The News Sentinel learned today that LSU made another run at Orgeron on Jan. 1, a day before he was formally introduced at UT.
Former Tennessee Coach John Chavis ended-up filling LSU's vacancy.
A source close to Orgeron told the News Sentinel that LSU offered Orgeron substantially more money than UT did. Tennessee is expected to pay Orgeron about $600,000 annually. The source said Orgeron turned down the LSU offer saying he was already committed to UT.
Orgeron gained national acclaim as a recruiter while at USC.
An unidentified source close to the Tennessee Athletic Department says Coach Orgeron is out recruiting and is unavailable for comment regarding this matter.
All of Tennessee's new coaches sign a memorandum of interest while the exact legal documens of their formal contract are being finalized.
If a coach were to leave for another institution during that "transitional" time, they or their new school would be responsible for paying Tennessee six-months of that particular coaches base salary as penalty.
