CLINTON -- A late Anderson County touchdown capped a seesaw archrivalry game, propelling the Mavericks to a 31-28 win over Clinton and advancing the Mavs to the 5A state quarterfinals.
The undefeated Dragons (10-1) fell behind 10-0, but bounced back late in the second quarter. Darian Stone rolled left and found Joel Chapman in the end zone for a score to make the tally 10-7.
But Anderson County (9-3) scored before the halftime whistle to take a 17-7 advantage to the locker room.
Clinton led 28-24 late in the game, but the Mavericks scored with time waning and snatched a 31-28 win away from the Dragons. Anderson County will play Columbia in the state quarterfinals next Friday night.
FARRAGUT 10, BEARDEN 3
KNOXVILLE -- Part II of the Battle of West Knoxville was more defensive than the first meeting but finished with the same result.
Farragut held off a feisty Bearden squad, holding on for a 10-3 win over its archrival and advancing toward a 6A state quarterfinal date with Maryville.
Admirals quarterback Reese Browning connected with Lee Van Dyne in the first quarter to give Eddie Courtney's team a 7-0 lead. A field goal added to the advantage.
Bearden posted a second-half field goal, but it was not enough to foil Farragut, who dominated the previous meeting between the teams, 42-17.
