Knoxville, (GoVolsxta.com/Dave Hooker) Tennessee receivers coach Frank Wilson has been offered a position on LSU’s coaching staff according to a source close to the hiring process.

Wilson would replace a position vacated by Larry Porter, who coached running backs and special teams at LSU before accepting the head coaching position at Memphis last Sunday.

It is unclear what Wilson’s LSU responsibilities would be if he accepted the job.

UT’s coaches come off the road recruiting Friday to hold their first bowl practice.

Wilson and UT coach Lane Kiffin are expected to meet sometime Friday to discuss Wilson’s options.

Kiffin has said numerous times that he expects other schools to try to hire away his assistants because of their strong resumes.

Wilson’s recruiting prowess would be a valuable addition for LSU.

The 36-year-old New Orleans native coached in Louisiana for eight years in high school and college.

He continued to recruit the area while coaching at Ole Miss from 2005-07 and Southern Miss in 2008.

Wilson was the director of athletics for the New Orleans Public School System and is still well respected in the city for his coaching and leadership following Hurricane Katrina.

LSU could almost assuredly offer Wilson more money than he’s currently making at UT.

Wilson is slated to make $150,000 this year, the second lowest on the staff.

Wilson, who also recruits in Mississippi, has secured a commitment for 2010 from defensive lineman Ken Adams from Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson, Miss., and one of the top 2011 prospects in Louisiana: defensive lineman Anthony Johnson from O. Perry Walker High School, who is related to Wilson.

Wilson, who works closely with UT recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron, has played a part in other commitments as well.

UT’s receivers — along with the rest of its offense — struggled early to make plays this season.

Injuries were certainly a factor as a handful of Vol wideouts missed time due to various ailments.

However, the receivers continued to improve and garnered recent praise from Kiffin — especially starters Gerald Jones and Denarius Moore.
