Knoxville (WVLT) -- Pay attention if you don't normally file a tax return!

To qualify for one of the 130 million economic stimulus payments being sent out may second, you must file!

Volunteer TV's Allison Hunt has some very simple instructions to follow so you get your payment.

The only way to get an economic stimulus payment is to file a tax return.

Those of you who are retired, receive social security, v-a benefits or you simply don't file, you still need to.

Dan Boone is an IRS Media Specialist and says, "The only way to get a stimulus payment is to file a tax return."

Here's who's eligible:

Those who have $3,000 of qualifying income, an individual who makes less than $75,000 or a married couple who makes less than $150,000.

Boone says, "If your income is over $75,000 or $150,000 for a couple then the payment amount starts to phase out to zero so you'll either get no check or reduced check. If your income is under $3,000 then you probably don't qualify."

People who receive V-A benefits or social security should receive a package in the mail with forms and instructions to file.

The irs will *only be contacting you through the mail.

Boone says, "We are not making phone calls or sending e-mails about payments. So, if you get a phone call or e-mail about rebates or payments, it's very likely a scam."

To be part of the first round of payments starting may second, have your tax return in by April 15th.

Boone says, "Filing after April 15th will not affect the amount of the payment, it will just effect when you get the stimulus payment. So as soon as you can file, the sooner you file, the better."

"Super Stimulus Saturday" will take place on March 29th.

From 9:00am 3:00pm in the John Duncan Federal Building you can prepare your return if you do not *normally file one.

It's first come, first serve and for those filing stimulus returns only.
