NASHVILLE — With the April 15th federal tax deadline looming, the IRS expects about 162,000 Tennesseans to be sending in extension requests and hundreds of thousands more to be filing tax returns over the next few days.

Tennesseans scrambling to complete a tax return or an extension by midnight Tuesday may qualify for free help at one of the agency’s offices or at a volunteer-staffed neighborhood tax help site. Nearly all sites offer free e-filing.

The site list below may not include all possible help sites. Call the IRS Help Site Locator toll-free at 1-800-906-9887 to find other locations. Or call the United Way by dialing 2-1-1 to locate a site.

Generally, taxpayers whose family income was under $40,000 in 2007 and who file a simple return qualify for the free assistance.

Seniors, retirees and others who normally are not required to file but are filing a 2007 return solely to get an economic stimulus payment, can find free help at many of these locations. Sites marked as “ESP” on the list below will assist stimulus payment filers as well as taxpayers filing normal tax returns. Other sites may prepare stimulus returns as time and staffing permits.

Only people who file a 2007 federal tax return reporting at least $3,000 in qualifying income will receive a stimulus payment this year.

Those coming to a free help site should bring with them: Photo ID/identification document, Social Security cards or tax ID number verification for all persons listed on the return, income documents for 2007, bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit, copy of last year’s tax return (if available). For a joint return, both husband and wife must be present.
