Tax Deadline: TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT

What is an extension? IRS Form 4868, Automatic Extension of Time to File

How does it work? If completed and filed by midnight, April 15, it gives the filer 6 months (to Oct. 15) to file their individual federal income tax return.

Does the extension also give me more time to pay? No. Any taxes not paid by April 15 are subject to late payment penalty and interest charges.

What are my options for filing an extension?

-File the Form 4868 online at no cost using IRS Free File.

-If you bought tax software, use the extension option.

-Print Form 4868 off IRS.gov. Complete it and mail it to the IRS by the filing deadline, April 15.

-Pay your taxes before midnight tonight using a credit card and an extension is automatically filed for you.

-Have your tax preparer file an extension for you.
