KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was still hospitalized late Thursday night following a late evening wreck along the Knox County and Union County line.

It happened around 7:00 p.m. on Old Maynardville Pike.

THP confirms that Trooper John R. Carr, 28, was involved in a crash with an SUV. Reports from the scene indicate it was a “T-bone” style crash where the side of one of the vehicles was impacted by the front or rear of another.

THP spokesman Mike Browning says the other vehicle, a 1999 Chevy Tahoe, was driven by Matthew Buckner, 39, of Maynardville. He is not facing charges.

The first crews to respond to the crash immediately radioed for a LifeStar helicopter and called in a rescue team to cut Carr from his cruiser. THP officials said he was conscious and talking when he was removed from the vehicle.

Carr was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition. Browning says Carr will likely be in the hospital for a few more days, and will require extensive physical therapy.

Buckner was also taken to St. Mary's North hospital where he was treated and released.

It wasn’t immediately clear who was at fault in the accident. A THP Critical Incident Response Team has been dispatched from Nashville to investigate, and Browning says the investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Carr has been with the Tennessee Highway Patrol since January 2007. He is a former Anderson County Sheriff's deputy and Clinton Police officer. He currently serves in the Tennessee Army National Guard.
