UNION COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - Emergency management workers in Union County have been working to contain a small oil spill.
Andrew Reed, director of Union County Emergency Management, said the spill came from a barge set up to do construction work on a bridge along Highway 33. Reed says workers were trying to pump out what they thought was water from a lower section of the barge on Saturday, but later realized it was oil.
An overnight containment area was set up to hold the oil, but some of it seeped into the Beach Island Marina side of Norris Lake.
Contractors on the construction project are Mountain State and Britton Bridge. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has been notified, but Reed says there have been no reports of injury to marine life.
