ORLANDO, Fla. (WVLT) -- Tennessee quarterback commitment Casey Kelly will likely forego his college eligibility and sign a contract with the Boston Red Sox after the team drafted him with its first pick, Kelly told Sports Overtime's Rick Russo Thursday.
"I'm so excited. It's like a dream come true," Kelly said. "I really can't tell you how much that meant to me."
When Russo asked if he was leaning towards signing with the Red Sox, Kelly said, "Yeah, that's definitely an honor to be picked in the first round. We'll just have to wait and see."
Kelly signed a scholarship to play football at Tennessee last February and was also planning on playing baseball for Todd Raleigh's Diamond Vols. That all depended on where he fell in the draft.
"[The Red Sox] and Yankees were the teams that weren't really afraid of football, and they were gonna do whatever it took to make it happen. They weren't worried about how much money or anything like that, so that was great," Kelly said.
"The next couple weeks with the contract and everything, we'll see how that works out."
Kelly said he had not yet talked to Phillip Fulmer, but did hear from Raleigh.
"Coach Raleigh texted me afterward to say congratulations," Kelly said. "I'm going to talk to them and tell them what's going on, but right now I don't know."
How about the opportunity to play quarterback for the Vols?
"That would just be amazing," Kelly told Russo. " With all the quarterbacks that have gone to UT, like Peyton Manning and Tee Martin, it would definitely be an honor to play quarterback at UT also."
The Boston Red Sox drafted Tennessee quarterback commitment Casey Kelly with the 30th and final pick of the first round of the MLB First-year Player Draft.
Kelly, who hails from Sarasota, Fla., must now decide whether he wants to sign a contract with the Red Sox or proceed with his commitment to play football and baseball for Tennessee. If he enrolls at UT, he will not be eligible for the draft again until after his junior season.
Kelly starred at shortstop and pitcher for Sarasota High School. At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, he could play either position for the Red Sox should he choose to embark on his baseball career.
MLB.com labels Kelly as "big and athletic," projecting well at shortstop. The MLB scouting report calls Kelly "a bit raw," but "intriguing" as a pitching prospect.
