KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee baseball team will kick off the third annual Orange and White World Series this weekend with a pair of games at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Friday and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
"The Orange and White World Series is always a highlight of the fall for us and we are excited to get back out on the field again this year," UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh said. "We've added a number of talented players to our roster and are in the process of making our stadium more fan friendly than it has ever been. These games give both our coaching staff and our fans a chance to see how our team and stadium are shaping up for the spring.
"We've set up five of our seven World Series games to coincide with home football weekends so that our fans in town for those games can stop by and enjoy some free baseball," Raleigh said. "We're looking forward to some good competition and hope to use this experience to get better for the spring."
The final five World Series games are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9, Sunday, Oct. 11, Saturday, Oct. 24, Sunday, Oct. 25 and Friday, Oct. 30. Start times for those games will be announced the week they are scheduled to take place.
The Volunteers were divided into two teams via a draft Wednesday morning. The White squad will be coached by infielders coach Bradley LeCroy and the Orange team will be led by pitching coach Jason Beverlin. All seven games will be played no matter the series outcome. Starting pitchers in the Orange and White World Series are prohibited from beginning a new inning after having thrown 70 or more pitches and Relievers can throw no more than two total innings in a weekend.
All seven contests will take place at UT's Lindsey-Nelson Stadium, which is currently undergoing the second of four phases of renovations. Fan attendance at the World Series games is encouraged and attendance is free. Seating will be available in the bleachers down the first-base line. On Friday, junior Bryan Morgado will get the start for LeCroy's squad, while sophomore Steven Gruver will take to the hill for Beverlin's team.
Headlining the White squad are juniors Morgado and Cody Hawn. One of only three players to return to school after being drafted in the first three rounds of the MLB Draft, Morgado started five games and made 15 appearances out of the bullpen for the Volunteers in 2009. He finished the year with a 4-2 record, a 6.36 ERA and two saves, while striking out a team high 75 batters in 52 1/3 innings.
Hawn, meanwhile, was a third-team selection on the 2009 Pro-Line Athletic/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America Team after becoming just the 10th Vol to ever win the team Triple Crown, leading the team in batting average (.364), home runs (22), RBIs (81), hits (72), doubles (15) and slugging percentage (.773). Hawn's 22 homers rank second on Tennessee's all-time list, while he also ranks in the top-10 for a season in RBI (third), total bases (ninth) and slugging percentage (seventh).
Other position players on the White roster are sophomore short stop Zach Osborne, junior second baseman Khayyan Norfork, senior catcher Matt Hamaker, junior outfielder Josh Liles, sophomore catcher Adam King, junior outfielder Josh Liles and sophomore outfielder Charley Thurber. Representing the veterans on the team's pitching staff are seniors Steve Crnkovich, Aaron Tullo, Stephen McCray and sophomores Josh Allman and Will Locante. First-year Vols set to pitch for the White squad are junior Spencer Clifft and freshmen Andy Hillis and Alan Walden.
The Orange roster will be led by junior catcher Blake Forsythe and North Carolina transfer Rob Catapano. A Memphis, Tenn., native, Forsythe earned first-team All-SEC laurels from the coaches in 2009 after starting 53 of 55 games behind the plate for Tennessee and turning in career numbers offensively. He hit .347 with 68 hits, 15 home runs and 46 RBIs, in addition to leading the team with 40 walks and a .486 on-base percentage.
On the mound, Catapano will be making his first appearance for the Big Orange after sitting out a season following his transfer after two years with the Tar Heels. While in Chapel Hill, he posted a 5-1 record and participated in a pair of College World Series. The former Farragut H.S. star tossed a total of 52.2 innings, striking out 50 and holding opposing hitters to a .245 batting average.
Beverlin will have nine other pitchers at his disposal, including Gruver, junior D.J. Leffler, sophomores Adam Adkins, Dylan Hochevar and Matt Ramsey and freshmen Nicholas Blount, Michael Theodore, Hunter Daniel and Jon Reed. Rounding out the squad offensively are senior infielder Cody Grisham and five newcomers in freshman infielder Cody Stubbs, junior infielder Tyler Hannah, freshman outfielder Christopher Fritts, junior third baseman Matt Duffy and freshman outfielder Drew Steckenrider.
