Mobile scored five of its six runs in the bottom of the third with A.J. Pollock giving Mobile a 2-1 lead with a two-run single before Ryan Wheeler hit a three-run homer to cap the two-out rally and give the BayBears a 5-1 lead.
Mobile starter Patrick Corbin (1-1) earned the win after tossing six innings where he allowed three runs on five hits. Tennessee starter Marco Carrillo (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.
Jae-Hoon Ha gave Tennessee an early 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the top of the first. Prior to the five-run bottom of the third, Carrillo had retired each man he faced in the first and second. The bottom of the third began with a Marc Krauss double, before Carrillo struck out Dan Kaczrowski and Corbin. With two outs, Adam Eaton was hit by a pitch before a walk to Jake Elmore loaded the bases for Pollock, who delivered a two-run single to give the BayBears the lead.
After Wheeler's home run gave Mobile a 5-1 lead, the BayBears added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Krauss hit a solo homer to right, putting the score at 6-1. Tennessee would answer with a two-run pinch hit homer by Ty Wright in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to three, but that's as close as the Smokies would get. Mobile relievers Clay Zavada, Billy Spottiswood, and Evan Marshall held the Smokies scoreless in the final three innings, with Marshall picking up the save in the ninth.
The clubs will play Game 2 of the SLCS on Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. Tennessee southpaw Brooks Raley (0-0, 12.27) will pitch against Mobile right-hander Jarrod Parker (1-0, 3.00). Game 2 begins at 8:05 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the broadcast beginning a 7:45 p.m. on the Smokies Radio Network.
