(Tennessee Athletics) -- Tennessee rising junior Steven Pearl totaled 10 points, five rebounds and three assists Tuesday night as Maccabi USA’s open men’s basketball team defeated a team of Philadelphia All-Stars 83-76 in exhibition action at La Salle University.
Dan Grunfeld and Avi Fogel led the U.S. Maccabi Team, which is coached by Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl, with 16 points apiece.
“It was a good experience for us, and I thought we played well considering we’ve only had a few practices together,” Bruce Pearl said. “This Philly team had some really tough players, and they played us really hard.”
The Philadelphia All-Star Team featured numerous NCAA standouts such as former Temple Owls Dionte Christmas and Mark Tyndale and former George Washington guard Maurice Rice.
The Maccabi Team departs for Israel and the 18th World Maccabiah Games on Thursday. The Games run from July 12-23, featuring more than 9,000 of the world’s top Jewish athletes from more than 50 countries. It is the world’s third-largest international athletic competition.
Steven Pearl and his sister, Jacqui, who also is traveling with the team and handling administrative responsibilities, both will be blogging from the Games. Their blogs can be accessed at UTsports.com
