(UNDATED) -- University of Tennessee sophomore basketball player Shekinna Stricklen has been named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and Lady Vol Athlete of the Week after leading the No. 8/9-ranked Lady Vols to a 74-65 win over the No. 7/4-ranked Baylor Lady Bears on Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena to open the 2009-10 season. The Morrilton, Ark., native scored 25 points, grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds, dished out five assists and tallied three steals.
The game against the Lady Bears marked Stricklen’s third career double-double. Her 25 points were one off of her career-high 26 points, which were scored at No. 6/5-ranked Auburn last season.
With the Lady Vols trailing 26-24 to Baylor at the half, Stricklen took over and ensured that Tennessee was not going to lose only its fourth season-opener under Head Coach Pat Summitt. In the second half, Stricklen scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished three assists and snagged two steals.
The Lady Vols take to the road for the first time in 2009-10 when they face the Texas Tech Lady Raiders at 6 p.m. CT in San Antonio, Texas, on Nov. 17. The game is part of the ESPNU Road To The Championship and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
