(UTSports.com) -- The Tennessee coaching staff dedicates one practice each fall strictly to improving depth by working almost entirely with the second and third-string units. Tuesday was that day, and considering the amount of news the Vols made off the field, it was a good thing none of the starters had much to talk about following the workout.

The first bit of news was good, and it came from the NCAA Tuesday morning. The NCAA Membership Services staff notified UT associate athletics director Brad Bertani that it had approved Tennessee's waiver requests on behalf of sophomore tight end Brandon Warren, making the Alcoa native eligible to play for the Vols this season.

"We're thrilled that he became eligible this morning," Phillip Fulmer said. "I think its a great compliment to him and the hard work that he put into it. I know he is very pleased, and his family is very pleased.

"Brandon has a great opportunity in front of him now, and he needs to fully take advantage of it in every way."

The second piece of news was also good for three former walk-ons. Sophomore Nick Reveiz and juniors Morgan Cox and Cody Sullins were placed on scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year.

Reveiz, a reserve linebacker, led the Vols last year in special teams tackles. Cox is entering his second season handling the deep snapper's duties for both punting and placements, while Sullins has been a regular on SEC travel squads and is splitting time this fall at center and guard.

"It's always thrilling when you are able to reward young men for their efforts," Fulmer said. "Particularly young men that have great character, work ethic and bring a spirit to your team.

"Morgan Cox has been a contributor for a year and taken a leadership role within the kicking group. Nick Reveiz played last year and played well for us on special teams. Cody Sullins is the essence of why you coach football. He comes to work every day; he's a great student and a yes-sir, no-sir guy. He's in position to be our backup center."

The final announcement from the head coach was that junior tight end Jeff Cottam will undergo back surgery Wednesday in Memphis. Fulmer said he expects the Germantown native to miss the next six to eight weeks recovering from the operation.

The final scrimmage of the preseason is scheduled for Thursday and will give the coaches a chance to see what impact "National Twos Get Better Day" had on the team.

Monday is the beginning of game week on the Tennessee practice schedule. The Vols take on UCLA seven days later in Pasadena, Calif. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT, and the contest will air live nationally on ESPN.
