KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Coach Derek Dooley's efforts to mold his new Tennessee team begin in earnest when the Volunteers begin spring practice on Thursday.

Dooley, who was hired in January after Lane Kiffin bolted for Southern California, has his work cut out for him.

His practices will be physical but not so physical that the Vols will run the risk of suffering injuries at positions where they have little depth.

To counter depth issues, Dooley has moved fullback Austin Johnson to linebacker and wide receiver Rod Wilks to safety.

Dooley said Wednesday offensive guard William Brimfield, who played in 12 of 13 games last season, has decided to leave the team. Another lineman, Aaron Douglas, will miss part of spring practice attending to a personal matter.

Coach Dooley statement about former players asking for permission to stop at their home base, is absolutely un heard of, the former Players have earned the right to drop by when ever they are in town, with out having to ask permission from Dooley to come to any factlity on campus. They have earned to right to come back home, and am really upset with an outsider, making this type of ruling on our former players, would he have to call ahead to visit Georgia campus. I understand rules for media and total strangers, but not our former player who earned the right to come back home with out his permission. Bad call Coach. Not anyway to earn support of our Vol fan base, to mistreat our veterans of our program.
