Wintry mix causes accidents, more snow to come in East TN

WVLT Pinpoint 8 Weather Center -- A wintry mix moved across Tennessee and Kentucky Saturday night and early Sunday morning resulting in numerous accidents across the region.

More snow is expected Sunday night into Monday morning with accumulation possible in the higher elevations.

Saturday night much of the region experienced freezing rain, snow, and sleet leaving patches of snow across many roads.

Reports from drivers Saturday night indicate traffic was backed up on I-40 near Cookeville after numerous accidents due to black ice on the interstate.

I-75 North near La Follette also experienced some bad road conditions with numerous accidents.

As of Sunday afternoon, the TN Department of Transportation is still reporting bad road conditions in certain parts of East Tennessee.

Scott, Campbell, Anderson, Union, and Claiborne Counties are all listed as having patches of snow and ice on roads.

Several roads around Morgan County are also listed as having patches of snow and ice as of Sunday afternoon.

And Highway 441 in Sevier County in the Smokies shows patches of snow and ice.

Whether you are in these areas or not, be extra careful out there.

Don't let the sunshine fool you into thinking roads are perfectly safe because a shaded back-road or a bridge can still be slick.

So allow yourself some extra time now, and through Tuesday morning as more snow will move across the area Sunday night through Monday night.

If you have pictures of bad road conditions or the wintry weather, share them with your Volunteer TV team and email them to weather@wvlt-tv.com
