Kentucky power-out numbers shrink, but thousands still in dark

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Utility crews in Kentucky are making progress, but thousands remain without power from last month's deadly snow and ice storm.

Power companies say they've got the number of power outages down to less than 35,000 across the state; That's from a peak of more than 769,000.

The storm first hit Jan. 27.

State officials have attributed 30 deaths to storm-related causes.

Some 101 counties and 75 cities in Kentucky have declared states of emergency.

President Barack Obama issued a major disaster declaration for the state last week.
