MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The National Weather Service determined there were 2 tornadoes that touched down in Tennessee during Friday's storms.
Early results from an aerial survey show the tornado impacted a 15-mile stretch in Murfreesboro, in Rutherford County. At it's widest, the path of the tornado was half a mile.
Preliminary reports show a rating of EF-2 with pockets of strength at EF-3, with winds topping out at an estimated 150 miles per hour. The final results may show the tornado to have been stronger than EF-3.
A Weather Service assessment team is surveying ground damage Saturday, to determine more details. The survey will be completed Sunday.
The tornado moved Northeast for the first 9 miles and then began a steady turn to the East.
The tornado killed 2 people and injured 41 others.
The aerial survey revealed 12 to 15 homes that were completely destroyed, and dozens of others suffered significant damage.
A 2-story office building had the entire upper floor removed by the tornado, and numerous vehicles were picked up and tossed, including semi-trucks.
The second tornado touched down in Sumner County.
An assessment team surveyed damage in Northwest Sumner County, near the intersection of Highway 25 and 76 Saturday and determined the damage was caused by a Tornado.
The path of the tornado was 0.6 mile with a maximum path width of 50 yards.
The damage was rated EF-1 in intensity with a maximum wind speeds around 100 miles per hour.
Three frame homes and a mobile home suffered significant roof damage along Creekmore Road, and numerous trees were snapped or uprooted.
